Superheroes Wear Glasses Too

Mark is a 3rd grader who struggled with attendance and spent a lot of time sleeping in class. He was not motivated to participate or complete his work. CIS learned from the school nurse that Mark needed glasses, and although he was referred to a resource for an exam and glasses by the school, he was refusing to wear them. He lost his glasses several times and then admitted that he was purposely not wearing them because he did not like how he looked.

The CIS Student Support Specialist knew that Mark loved superheroes and decided to show Mark different pictures of actors that wore glasses and played his favorites superheroes in movies or television shows. CIS also worked out an incentive with Mark to encourage him to wear his glasses daily. Each morning, Mark would stop by the CIS office and show that he was wearing his glasses and CIS provided incentives of treasure box toys.

Not only was Mark excited for these visits and earning treasure box prizes, he became interested in reading a new book series donated to CIS. Mark had been struggling with his reading, but it was obvious that his excitement about reading a new book every couple of days was also helping build his confidence. In just one month, Mark earned a treasure box prize every week AND read three chapter books!
